Digital Collage
Bringing to the foreground what would normally appear and disappear in an instant: this is the focus of the research behind the Digital Collage.
Fragments of moving video are captured, isolated and transformed into still images. The image is then enlarged, reworked and transferred onto canvas, where the painterly intervention becomes imprint, trace and gesture, restoring a sense of movement and generating a new visual meaning.
The works Digital Collage works are high-quality prints mounted on canvas and finished with brushstrokes of industrial enamel. Dimensions range from 100×70 cm to 200×140 cm. The works are unframed and signed by the artist on the reverse.
The series originated around 1999, initially as part of Ramagnano’s research during his studies at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. The work developed through the fusion of pre-existing imagery and painterly intervention, moving from traditional collage techniques to the projection of images onto canvas.
The act of cropping comes to coincide with the photographic gesture, while the manual construction of collage is replaced by projection. The subsequent painterly intervention completes the work, establishing the image as a tangible and permanent presence.
This research also gave rise to the performance series Prestige, where opposing languages — visible and invisible, presence and absence, appearance and disappearance — converge, creating a space of illusion in which reality and fiction take on the same form and intensity.
